Quality Management for Blood Establishments
FOCUS: Quality Management Review and Key Performance Indicators in Blood Establishments

Dear Blood healthcare professional,

Quality management in blood transfusion services has undergone significant change over the last decade, requiring blood establishments (BEs) to adapt their quality management systems (QMS) so that they continue to be effective and fit for purpose.

Quality management review (QMR), in addition to being a key driver of BE performance, is an excellent tool, both for providing management teams with an overview of the activities performed by BEs and for monitoring processes in order to identify opportunities for continuous improvement. For a more efficient process, QMR usually draws primarily on the evaluation of relevant key performance indicators (KPIs), which are used to monitor the performance of the various processes and to identify any changes, corrective actions and preventive actions that may need to be implemented.

The importance of QMR is emphasised in applicable European Union blood legislation, Good Practice Guidelines (GPGs) and the Guide to the preparation, use and quality assurance of blood components published by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM)/Council of Europe. The European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM)/Council of Europe, supported by the European Commission, is organising a training course on Quality Management Review (QMR) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for blood establishments (BEs).

This free training course will support staff within BEs responsible for implementing, conducting and/or improving their QMR process. It will be delivered virtually, in four self-training modules over four weeks beginning on 9 October 2023, followed by a live online module from 6 to 8 November 2023.
